There’s a reason the humble polo shirt has been at the heart of our casual wardrobes for over 150 years – it’s elegant, comfortable and very easy to wear.
At Tyrwhitt, we make polo shirts to suit almost every dress code; from business and smart-casual to off-duty. In a dark colour like navy, charcoal or forest green, they’re easy to layer beneath blazers and chinos for work meetings or well-dressed evenings out. Try a navy piqué polo beneath a blue and a matching blazer with classic stone chinos and snuff suede shoes. It’s an understated look that will take you anywhere.
Of course, the polo is the perfect piece for the weekends too – whether you’re relaxing at home, socialising with friends or escaping to the country for 48 hours. This season’s colours are just the thing to give your ‘at home’ wardrobe a lift, and are easily paired with chinos (try our Soft Washed Chinos for a casual look). Finish with our white leather trainers for good measure.
Did you know that we have a jacquard stripe polo made from our technical ‘Tyrwhitt Cool’ cotton? Each polo is knitted from extra-fine pure cotton yarn that’s been spun and finished to wick moisture away from the skin, while the waffle knit structure allows cooling air to flow through your shirt. The result is a warm weather wardrobe staple designed to keep you comfortable throughout the day. They come in a variety of colours, which work a treat with a well-cut blazer or with a simple sweater thrown over your shoulders.
Our short sleeve Tyrwhitt Piqué Polos, in all colours of the rainbow, and are made from smooth cotton with a touch of stretch for comfort. These are garment washed for extra softness and finished with our signature lapwing embroidered on the chest, a motif taken from the Tyrwhitt family crest. Alongside these, our Smart Jersey Polos are designed to look sharp beneath a blazer, and feature concealed button-down collars that are sized to sit neatly beneath a jacket’s lapels.
Like so many pieces in the modern man’s wardrobe, the polo shirt’s origins lie in good old fashioned sportswear. You might well have guessed that the clue’s in the name, and that early polos were worn by aristocratic sportsmen atop their ponies, racing around 19th century polo fields with mallets in-hand. The earliest recorded example of purpose-made shirts been worn during a polo match dates to 1859 in Jaipur, India, where the sport was popular among the British aristocracy.
